DIY Potted Plant Fertilizer
Did you know that you can use some of your food scraps to make plant fertilizer in under 5 minutes? All you need are a few common food scraps and a blender.
My family currently lives and rents in a city that recycles, but does not have a citywide compost program. So I was really excited when I found out I could feed my plants with food scraps that would have ended up in the trash. I love this fertilizer because I know where the ingredients came from and I don't feel wary about using this to nurture the plants that I grow for food. Peace of mind, good plant food, and waste reduction all in one.
DIY POTTED PLANT FERTILIZER

Ingredients
Banana peel
Egg shells
Used coffee grounds
Water
Directions
Place banana peel, egg shells and coffee grounds in the blender.
Add water as necessary to prevent the blender from jamming.
Pour into the pot of the plant you want to fertilize.
Wash blender thoroughly.
I find that I can fertilizer a few 4" wide potted plants with this recipe. The banana peel is a great source of potassium. The egg shells are a great source of calcium. The coffee grounds add nitrogen to the soil. All good things that fertile soil needs for maintenance. Happy gardening!
